WAV Grant Scheme 2025

WAV Grant Scheme

 What makes a car more valuable<br />

The Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Grant Scheme 2025 (WAV25) is an initiative by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to promote the availability of wheelchair-accessible small public service vehicles (SPSVs) across Ireland. This scheme offers financial assistance to individuals and companies aiming to operate or upgrade wheelchair-accessible taxis and hackneys.

Key Features of the WAV25 Grant Scheme:

  • Application Periods: The WAV25 Grant Scheme is scheduled to open for applications on two occasions in 2025. The first opening was on January 6, 2025, and the second is planned for July 2025. On each occasion, the online NTA application portal will close to new applications once a predetermined number of applications has been received.

  • Eligibility: The scheme is available nationwide to:
    • Persons (individuals or companies) applying for new SPSV licences;
    • Existing wheelchair-accessible vehicle licence holders who wish to upgrade their current wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a replacement wheelchair-accessible vehicle; and
    • Existing operators who wish to exchange their standard taxi licence for a wheelchair-accessible taxi licence either on conversion of their current vehicle or with a replacement vehicle.

Full eligibility details are available in the official WAV25 Information Guide.

  • Funding Levels: The NTA has seen incredible demand for the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Grant Scheme, with Round 1 of WAV25 closing early on opening day. This demand for financial support to upgrade and license small public service vehicles such as taxis and hackneys continues to show a strong interest in the SPSV sector from prospective and existing licence holders. The NTA is pleased to confirm that the level of grant funding for WAV25 is planned to exceed all previous years, with a high of over €6 million issued in 2024.
  • Grant Amounts: The specific grant amounts and conditions are detailed in the WAV25 Information Guide. Applicants are encouraged to review this guide thoroughly to understand the financial support available and the associated requirements.
  • Application Process: Applications must be submitted online through the NTA’s application portal. The process is competitive, and due to high demand, it’s advisable to apply promptly when the scheme opens. Detailed application procedures are outlined in the WAV25 Information Guide.

Important Considerations:

  • Disability Awareness Training: Approved applicants are required to complete an NTA-approved course on disability awareness training specific to SPSVs by December 12, 2025, to qualify for the grant.
  • Compliance: Recipients must adhere to all terms and conditions set forth by the NTA, including the proper use of the grant and maintaining the vehicle in service for a specified period. Non-compliance may result in the repayment of the grant.
